Term Limits and Why I Oppose Them

10 December 2017

There seems to be a lot of noise coming forth from the masses about the need for term limits for members of Congress.  While in theory, this is good, in practice it actually will hurt.  Allow me a chance to persuade you.

There are 435 Congressional Districts in the United States.  IF we get a Constitutional Amendment limiting the number of terms or years a Representative or Senator can serve, we are effectively abdicating our right to choose who represents us.  IF we allow a Constitutional Amendment, we have allowed the other 434 Congressional Districts a say in who can or can not represent us.  Why should you allow the people of California’s 1st Congressional District to determine who can represent you if you live in Missouri’s 4th Congressional District?  Yes, a Constitutional Amendment would force several Congressmen and Senators into retirement, many who should have retired years ago.

With the passage of the 17th Amendment, We the People allowed the several states to abdicate their protection from an overreaching central government.  As Senators are now elected by the people of the states, the Senate is no longer the representative of the State, but has become a second House of Representatives, just serving a longer term.  Leaving the several states with no protection.  Does anyone truly believe Senators McCain, Schumer, Durbin, Feinstein, McConnell et al would still be sitting members of the Senate if not for the 17th?

To fix the Senate, We the People MUST repeal the 17th Amendment.  To fix the House or Representatives, We the People MUST become informed and engaged with our Representative.  When they fail to represent the voters of their district, said voters must provide appropriate feedback.  The same goes for when they are doing what their constituency desires of them.  If they aren’t doing the job you HIRED them to do, work to replace them.  That is why members of the House are selected every two years.  The will of We the People must be heard.  Return the protection to the states from a too strong central government by advocating for repeal of the 17th Amendment.  Will it be easy?  Absolutely not.  Will it be worth it?  I believe so.

Don’t abdicate your RIGHT to choose who represents you in the House of Representatives by supporting a Constitutional Amendment for term limits.  Fight for your RIGHT to select the person you want to represent you.
