Free Speech?

Lawmakers claim Air Force culture becoming ‘hostile towards religion’

NYC principal bars students from singing ‘God Bless the USA’ at graduation

More and more often, I am seeing headlines such as those.  The reason being given is “We don’t want to ‘offend’ anyone.”  Well, I am looking through my copies of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States and I can not find any reference that protects us from being offended.

According to the Declaration of Independence all men are “endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among them are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.  And nowhere in the Constitution of the United States nor its attendant Bill of Rights, is there a right to not be offended.  The only place that comes close, in my opinion, is the First Amendment’s protections against Congress making a law abridging free speech.

One reason for the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States is to protect that speech that some may find objectionable or offensive.

“In those wretched countries where a man cannot call his tongue his own, he can scarce call anything his own. Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech” – Benjamin Franklin

My friends, with the advent of “hate crime” enhancements to criminal charges and sentencing guidelines, the prohibition of mentioning God in the Town Square, etc, we have crossed the threshold and I fear we will not be able to make our way back.  We see it every day, individuals being prosecuted for their thoughts.  What is in their mind, not for their actions.  What’s next?  The police coming and knocking on your door simply because you disagree with the current administration?  I hope not.
